For the past 5 weeks I have spoken about nothing else other than my internship. But what is it? I am employed for a total of 7 weeks at a software company as their copywriter. The company are located in the centre of Bath and it is office-based. The business is about helping companies, organisations and individuals discover their full potential and talent, which is assessed through a collection of game-based assessments. You can find out your skills and talents, your strengths and weaknesses, and be matched to your perfect career. It's very complex and science/psychology based!

A copywriter is defined as someone who writes the text for advertisements or publicity material.

So far this is what i've been doing:

  • Running part of the companies social media accounts, which means being active on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Weekly there's a theme so I schedule the content around the theme. I have to research the weekly topic/theme and find relevant resources and links
  • Write blog posts which are also centred around the same theme. Failure, university and productivity are some of my most recent topics
  • Creating the content for ads, some short and punchy strap lines to advertise the company
  • Provided the content for a brochure that is to be used at my university careers fair next month
  • Helped create a Chatbot for the website. I wrote some of the responses for the bot so when users talk to it, the responses are mine! (This was very exciting and fun.)
  • Created a style guide for the chatbot for other employees to use. The guide tells readers how to write in the correct manner for the bot.
  • Created a persona for the bot, creating a character to represent the bot when writing for it.
Everything I've done so far has been very exciting, fun and rewarding. It's my first experience in a full-time job* and I feel so lucky to have started it in this small company in my favourite city. The team are so wonderful, interesting and intelligent. The offices are welcoming and comfortable. It's very relaxed and I couldn't be happier. Most days we all sit together, eat lunch and chat, it's cute.

*Why didn't anyone warn me how exhausting full-time work is? My flat is a complete mess, there's no time to wash my hair and I'm living off snacks in the evening because I'm so tired... It's fun though.

Being part of a small business means my work gets recognition, it feels worthwhile to know the content I'm providing means something. I like working mostly by myself, so this role is ideal for that because I set my own tasks and deadlines by writing to-do lists, and I kind of work to my own schedule. I feel so important!!!

Honestly, I've never been so happy working in my life. Previously my employment has been retail based and I've hated every second of it because of my tendency to feel anxious. However this is different, I just want to tell everyone all the time how much I'm loving it and how I never want to leave. Every time I start a new task/project I feel so excited about writing and the opportunity to produce content for an actual business!!! I still cannot believe I got the opportunity, especially a paid internship, because the writing industry is a tough one! I've been learning soooo much about how business works, marketing copy, artificial intelligence, and technology and science.

I've got the rest of this week left then 2 more working weeks before I return back to uni. I think I'm definitely going to miss the social side of things, we've been out for cocktails several times, out for food as a team and taken part in a charity boat race. To be honest, I'm going to miss it all and I hope I can go back at some point.
