Why I'm No Longer Vegan
I was vegan for 2.5 years from Sept 2014 till April 2017. I made the transition from vegetarian to vegan because I didn't eat many products with dairy or milk anyway, so it seemed fitting to make the jump. Being vegan for me meant I ate a lot of carbohydrates, I ate a lot of bread and rice and pasta, like a lot. Also a lot of vegan junk food (It's a glorious thing when Oreos, bourbon biscuits and garlic bread are vegan) but I also ate A LOT of fruit and vegetables. It was challenging to eat out, unless I went to a specific vegan restaurant/cafe, which I did many a time and the food was bloody incredible, and I still eat vegan food out and about anyway.
Reasons why I'm no longer vegan:
Reasons why I'm no longer vegan:
- I like eggs. My family own chickens so there's always eggs available. It started off with eggs, I remember craving them and then feeling a bit weird going out to buy them... I eat scrambled egg every single day pretty much. Their excellent for my diet, diabetics aren't supposed entertain a high carbohydrate diet and at the time I was struggling with very high blood sugars and I needed to sort it out.
- My health. (^^^). My diabetes control was all over the place, I needed less carbohydrate, and eggs, luckily are carb free, so it was a step forward. I'm not very vocal about my eating habits, but let me tell you, they are not good. Veganism for me was a way of restricting. It was an excuse to not eat something because it had dairy in it. That's my main reason for returning to vegetarianism because of the restrictiveness, I didn't use veganism as a positive thing, it made me more of a control freak.
- Bored and impatient of constantly finding suitable things to eat. Shopping became a hassle, eating out was even worse. Honestly, I couldn't be bothered anymore.
- Money. You can eat a vegan diet on a budget but there are a lot of costy, delicious meat substitutes. Being on a student budget meant I couldn't buy all these fantastic substitutes, so I was eating the same meals day in, day out. It got boring quickly. There was no variety, which, obviously was my own fault but it wasn't for me. I wasn't eating enough exciting foods. Just brown rice, kidney beans and sweetcorn.
- The freedom to eat. Christmas last year was the loveliest, I didn't feel like I couldn't eat something, or that I was a burden for family buffets to cater for me. I could indulge in cheese boards, and everything cheesy and milky and yummy. I wasn't constantly looking at food labels, checking for milk, it was freeing. I can order takeaway with my siblings and eat cheesy pizza. Because, damn, it's so good. How did I ever go two years without eating cheese?
- Because I will end up eating meat regularly again. Tbh I've already eaten some, but slightly by accident when drunk and by mistake... Lol. #FakeVeggie
Basically this post is just me being silly and justifying my reasons for vegetarianism, but at least I did my part, and found out veganism isn't for me.
